Pre-Kindergarten

(4 to 5 years old)

The Pre-Kindergarten Program at The Malvern School includes a balanced curriculum of math, science, social studies, computer, gross motor and fine motor activities, and artistic experiences. The curriculum** is aimed at developing skills in all areas and preparing them for ongoing academic success. We provide personalized instruction offering children developmentally appropriate challenges that foster self-esteem and self-awareness.

PRE-K LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Pre-reading skill-building through expanded vocabulary, advanced sentence structures, story sequencing, and phonemic awareness.

Nurturing curiosity about our world and interest in all parts of the scientific process such as inquiry, predicting, and hands-on experiments.

Comprehension of math concepts including number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, patterning, sequencing, and simple problem solving.

Development of fine and large motor skills that will enable children to grasp pencils, use scissors, climb, jump, run, and engage in daily active play.

Enjoyment and appreciation of the creative arts, including visual arts, music and movement, and dance and drama.

In the Discovery Room, Pre-K students can explore in the sensory center, play dress-up and pretend, make music, do arts and crafts, read, or work on the computers.

Social and emotional well-being through cooperative play, community and cultural studies, and character development.

Experienced Teachers

Our teachers are college educated in early childhood education and/or elementary education and have a wealth of experience in the field. Our Lead Teachers plan, supervise, and implement an early childhood education program in accordance with The Malvern School philosophy and NAEYC standards.

A TYPICAL DAY IN OUR PRE-K CLASSROOM

Children arrive at The Malvern School, get settled in, and begin participating in learning center activities.

Includes greeting songs, books, fingerplays, introduction of concepts.

Computer activities are done in small groups.

The Malvern School provides 2 organic snacks each day.

Discovery Room activities include dramatic play, manipulatives, art and music, sensory blocks and vehicles, and book nook.

Curriculum Plan activities include pre-reading/language arts, math concepts, science, multi-cultural/social studies, large/fine motor skills, art experiences, music and movement, and computer.

We have 3 age-appropriate playgrounds for every school: an infant playground, toddler playground, and pre-k and up playground.

Activities are done in large and small groups.

Parent-provided lunch is given to the children at this time. Cleaning up after meals is also an encouraged routine.

Full Day students will complete independent learning activities while half day students are getting picked up.

Children will take time to nap or rest and recharge before continuing with their day.

Students participate in various S.T.E.A.M. enrichment activities and will have snack.

Children will play in our age-appropriate pre-k playground.

Students participate in various enrichment activities.

Learning center activities will happen at this time. Teachers will communicate with parents/guardians at pick-up about their child’s day.

This is a sample Pre-K schedule; actual schedules will vary by location. Throughout the day, Pre-K students are encouraged to develop self-help skills when using the restroom, washing hands, and managing their belongings at meals and rest time.
