Reading to your young child is essential for their development. At The Malvern School we have a strong commitment to literacy through several programs for children of all ages. In addition to our author of the month and a focus on monthly themes, we also host several Mrs. Bush’s Story Times throughout the year.

Here are just a few of our favorite books that belong in your young child’s library! books

  1. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak – This award-winning classic children’s book is loved by both children and adults alike. The illustrations carry the reader through the wonderful imaginary world of Max and the ‘Wild Things’.
  2. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein – This picture book is a tender story of a relationship between a boy and a tree. The beautifully written and illustrated story explores the relationship between giving and taking.
  3. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg – Our Author of the Month for December is Chris Van Allsburg. Along with Chris’ calm and relaxing storyline, the illustrations in this book have been critically acclaimed. Now a classic Christmas story, The Polar Express tells the story of a young boy’s mysterious journey to the North Pole.
  4. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst – A funny and endearing story that follows Alexander throughout his very bad day — from gum in his hair to no dessert at lunch and lima beans for dinner, the day cannot get any worse, but it does! The comedic misery of Alexander’s day will delight your child.
  5. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle – With distinct collage illustrations, Erica Carle’s award-winning book uses simple text with educational themes – counting, days of the week, food and a butterfly’s life stages. Personally selected by Mrs. Bush for story time, this critically acclaimed book is a must-have for your child’s bookshelf.
