Dana Auman, Preschool Lead Teacher at
The Malvern School of Frazer, not only received the 2021 Terri Lynne Lokoff Teacher Award, she ranked among the top 10 award recipients from teachers across the country. We sat down with Dana to learn more about her highly effective approach in the classroom, as well as how she leverages her prior experience teaching at the elementary school level to help her preschool students prepare for Kindergarten and beyond.
TMS: What drives you and your approach to teaching?
DA:
My approach to teaching is driven by my years of experience in a variety of positions in education. I have been fortunate to work in multiple child care settings in both administrative and teaching positions, as well as in a variety of elementary school grade levels. Each has provided me with insight on what a young student needs to succeed.
TMS: Whats your secret to success in the classroom?
DA: I consider my classroom successful when my students are successful.
After teaching in Kindergarten, I noticed a few common traits in the prepared students. Those that could take care of their own needs and communicate effectively also absorbed academics quicker. When I returned to teach preschool, I made it my priority to focus on self-help and communication skills. As soon as I see my students confidently apply these skills, I know they have achieved success.
TMS: Why did you choose to dedicate your career to early childhood education?
DA: Early learning is critical to the growth and development of successful young children. I chose to dedicate my career to early childhood education because I saw the value in it when I worked at the elementary school level. A quality early childhood education provides a student with a jumpstart in their scholastic journey.
Just as teaching experience can help an educator perfect their craft, early learning experience can benefit a child in their academic career.

TMS: What does being a recipient of the Terri Lynne Lokoff Teacher Award mean to you?
DA: I feel extremely honored and grateful to be a recipient of the Terri Lynne Lokoff Teacher Award. It is very flattering to be acknowledged by an organization dedicated to recognizing outstanding child care teachers. Throughout my career I have encountered talented educators who have inspired me and helped me grow. I wouldnt be the teacher I am today without their support and wisdom.
This experience strengthens my commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences for my students.
